The jeep trails are open, the hiking is spectacular, and the weather is warm.

We did have a bit of rain the last few days, however, that did not stop the adventurers in town. Ouray is waiting for you.

More snow than…

It’s official. December was the snowiest December on record with 74.1 inches of snow! That’s a lot of snow.

While the snow is good, it has created some dangerous avalanche conditions, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. They reported winds gusting to 80 miles per hour eight times, with a peak gust of 122 miles per hour on Christmas Day.

Red Mountain had 136% of average snowfall at the end of December. Whew!

In addition, the Ice Festival just ended. The ice in the park is getting fat again, and many adventures are at our doorstep.

Come on out for an adventure.

Again

Yes, it snowed again. It made for a beautiful morning. The falls were running a bit slower to start, but once the sun came out, they picked up in volume quickly.

A beautiful morning above town. Hiking through some snow as the sun came above the ridgeline. And high above town with stunning views of the million dollar highway, Camp Bird Mine Road going off to the right, and Ouray nestled at the bottom.

Get out and get some for yourself. See you this summer.

Water, water everywhere

With warm temperatures comes running water. The local waterfalls should be beautiful this year with all of the snow that fell.

The warm temperatures are making the waterfalls evident. From almost anywhere in town, or on the hillsides, a quick stop and listen usually yields the sound of running water.

The next two days weather forecast calls for highs in the low 60′s. It seems that spring may finally be upon us.

Spring at 9,100 feet

This is what spring looks like this year at 9,100 feet. The snowman is posing in front of The Ribbon and Bird Brain Boulevard, two local ice climbs. The other shot is what it looks like at the end of the currently plowed section of Camp Bird Mine Road.

Simply beautiful.

The Plaindealer reported this week that Ouray has had the most snow in the 60 years the National Weather Service has been keeping records: 253.1 inches. That’s 21 feet! The previous record, in 1983-84, was 227.4 inches. In comparison, the historic mean is 137.52 inches per year.

What does all of this mean? There is still plenty of snow, plenty of backcountry skiing, the waterfalls will be beautiful, and the rivers will be running fast.

What the?!?

This bear was across the street and up the hillside. What drew him in? The long, cold winter may be coming to an end and he may have had some rumbly in his tumby.

The bear strolled down the hillside looking for the meal he smelled. A deer that didn’t make it through the winter provided just the right incentive.

He stayed for a while and then headed up the hillside searching for some bugs and leaves. In the past week, a red fox, and a coyote have stopped for a snack in the same place.

Weather report. Although sunny during this posting, the previous two days dropped about two feet of fresh snow. Backcountry skiing will be available for a long time this year.

Spring?

But, it was almost 50 degrees yesterday. Yes, indeed it was.

Snowing today. Big, wet flakes, and a lot of them. A few more winter activities…at least for a few more hours.

Still hanging around

The ice park is still open as the ice is hanging on. The photo above is from the high bridge in the ice park of a climber on March 31, 2008. It snowed the same day.

The temperatures are forecast to be in the 20′s at night and into the 50′s during the day. But, don’t put away those winter coats just yet. Snow is forecast for tomorrow.

Still, spring is just around the corner. The snow is melting out faster each day and more and more trails are bare. So, get out there, or better yet…get out here.
